The Imo State Government has awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the long-dilapidated 35.1-kilometre Owerri–Elele Road to Craneburg Construction Company. This move marks a major push by Governor Hope Uzodimma to overhaul critical infrastructure across the state’s 27 local government areas.
Announcing the development, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure Development, Ralph Nwosu, described the project as a “significant milestone,” aimed at improving connectivity, enhancing road safety, and driving economic growth in the region. The commissioner also revealed that Craneburg Construction Company, which is currently nearing completion of the Owerri Control Post Interchange flyover near the Assumpta Catholic Cathedral, has begun mobilizing equipment to the site.
Despite the road being a federal asset, Nwosu explained that the state government decided to take on the project under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) framework, citing the deplorable condition of the road and the need to alleviate the suffering of commuters and residents.
He emphasized that the project will be closely supervised to ensure adherence to the Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation (BEME) agreed upon by both parties. The commissioner reiterated that this contract reflects the government’s dedication to improving infrastructure and delivering tangible benefits to the people of Imo State.
