At least four people have been confirmed dead and seven others declared missing following a suspected herdsmen attack on Ikpakpara village in Agu-Amed, Eha-Amufu, located in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, has once again heightened fears over the worsening security situation in the east. A community leader, Ogbuzuru Ebe, said that the victims were attacked while working on their farms.
“We just recovered four bodies of people killed on their farms. We are looking for seven people who are still missing after the attack,” Ebe said.
This latest assault is one in a series of violent incidents linked to suspected herders in Eha-Amufu, which have left numerous farmers dead and women subjected to sexual violence. The frequency and brutality of these attacks have sparked outrage and fear among residents.
Local leaders have criticized the perceived inaction of authorities and have accused the local government chairman of failing to adequately support community security efforts. Many residents are calling on the state and federal governments to intervene decisively to end the violence and restore peace.
The incident comes just a day after Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, visited Eha-Amufu on a routine patrol. The visit, described by the police as a “confidence-building” exercise, included senior officers and heads of tactical units. However, Sunday’s deadly attack has raised fresh questions about the effectiveness of such efforts.
