Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the recent killings in Ikpakpara village, Agamede, Eha-Amufu community, Enugu State, describing the violence as heartbreaking and a troubling reflection of Nigeria’s escalating security crisis.
On Sunday, at least seven residents were reportedly killed and two others declared missing after suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded the Agu-Amed Autonomous community in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area. Witnesses claim the assailants were dropped from helicopters, which hovered over the community throughout the attack, adding a disturbing dimension to the assault.
Reacting to the incident in a statement released on Tuesday via his official X handle, Obi lamented the continued attacks on rural farming communities and called for decisive, lasting solutions. He emphasized that the ongoing insecurity in Eha-Amufu and similar areas threatens not just lives and livelihoods but the stability of the country.
“Yet another heartbreaking report of the brutal killing of innocent farmers in Ikpakpara village, Agamede, Eha-Amufu community in Enugu State. My heart breaks for the Eha-Amufu people, for the grieving families, and for those still searching for their missing loved ones,” Obi wrote.
He stressed the urgent need for real and immediate security interventions, stating that the inability of farmers to return to their farms out of fear jeopardizes national food security. He also condemned the pattern of repeated violence in Eha-Amufu, calling it unacceptable and unsustainable.
“These killings must stop. We cannot keep watching communities bleed without justice or protection. We cannot continue to allow our farmers to be afraid of going back to their farms. These communities deserve not only our compassion but also real and immediate security intervention,” he stated.
Obi concluded his message by offering condolences to the grieving families and reaffirming his solidarity with the Eha-Amufu community. “To the people of Eha-Amufu, you are not alone. I offer my heartfelt condolences to your community, and I pray that the souls of the departed rest in peace. May peace and security return to your land,” he said.
