A tricycle driver in Aba, Abia State, is receiving national acclaim after returning ₦4 million forgotten in his vehicle by a passenger. The driver, Onyema, popularly known as “Onye,” hails from Umuomei in Obingwa Local Government Area and is a devout Jehovah’s Witness.
The incident occurred on Thursday, June 26, 2025, when a Cameroonian woman boarded Onye’s keke from Aba Main Park to Ariaria Market. Unaware she had left behind a bag containing ₦4 million, the woman disembarked in distress. Onye, upon discovering the money, began a frantic search to locate her.
He eventually found her at a junction near Ariaria Market—distraught, in tears, and contemplating suicide over the lost sum. Moved by compassion, Onye returned the money immediately, offered comfort, and even suggested she spend the night in a hotel to recover from the ordeal. The woman, overwhelmed with gratitude, paid for the hotel stay.
Despite criticism from some of his peers, who ridiculed him for not keeping the money, Onye stood by his decision. “I love what I did,” he said. “I need a new keke, but not another woman’s money.”
Onye attributed his actions to his faith and upbringing. “I have made your name to be praised,” he said, referring to his devotion to Jehovah. His story has since gone viral, sparking admiration across the city of Aba and beyond, and highlighting the enduring power of integrity, honesty, and empathy in a world often driven by self-interest.
