Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dispelling speculation that he might be planning to defect.
Speaking during an interactive session with members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Enugu on Saturday, the governor stated clearly, “I am still in the PDP. As you can see, the flag behind me is that of the PDP.”
Governor Mbah acknowledged that the PDP, like other political parties in Nigeria, is grappling with internal challenges but expressed confidence that the issues would soon be resolved.
On the topic of independent candidacy, Mbah pointed out that Nigeria’s current constitution does not permit individuals to contest elections without the backing of a political party. “You must still do politics,” he said. “It is also clear from the people of Enugu State that we are in this to serve them, so we have focused largely on governance.”
He emphasized that ultimately, it is the people who will decide whether to renew a government’s mandate or vote for a change.
In a notable political development, Governor Mbah revealed that his main opponent in the 2023 gubernatorial race, Chijioke Edeoga, has returned to the PDP and is now working with his administration to advance the state’s development agenda.
“We are working closely together, and that has brought a lot of peace. We are not spending money dealing with political fights. Politics here is peaceful and collaborative,” Mbah said.
He concluded by stressing the importance of unity and cooperation in building a stronger Enugu State, stating that working with institutions and individuals toward a common goal is essential for meaningful progress.
