Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced plans to collaborate with private investors to develop the proposed Abia Stadium City, a mega sports and entertainment complex aimed at boosting the state’s economy and infrastructure. The governor disclosed this during a meeting with a delegation from the Irish Development Group (IDG), led by Managing Director Nigel Neely, who presented the project’s master plan at the Government House in Umuahia.
Otti emphasized the importance of private-sector involvement to ensure the project’s sustainability beyond his administration. “We want partners who not only have the capacity to deliver but are willing to invest long-term. Government may hold a 10–20% stake, but private investors will drive ownership and operations,” he stated. The governor praised IDG’s preliminary studies and site inspection, noting the strategic location of the 96-hectare land near the ongoing Abia Airport project. “This proximity creates synergies for tourism, accommodation, and commerce, making it a holistic destination,” Otti added.
Nigel Neely described the Stadium City as a transformative initiative to position Abia as a hub for sports, tourism, and smart living. The blueprint includes a world-class stadium, a high-performance training center, a tech-integrated residential district, and hospitality zones. “This project will attract global attention and redefine urban development in the region,” Neely affirmed.
Otti also addressed potential power challenges, revealing plans to acquire the Umuahia ring-fenced area of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to ensure stable electricity supply. Commissioners for Youth and Sports, Nwaobilor Ananaba, and Finance, Uwaoma Ukandu, joined the governor in reviewing the proposal, with Otti directing further technical discussions to finalize funding models and timelines.
