Abia State Governor Alex Otti has pledged to celebrate and reward athletes representing the state at the upcoming 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Speaking during the ceremonial handover of the “Torch of Unity” at Nvosi, Abia, Otti emphasized sports as a unifying force that prioritizes merit over discrimination, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to nurturing athletic talent.
The governor confirmed that funds had been approved and released to support Team Abia’s participation in the event, dubbed the “Gateway Games,” scheduled for May 16–30, 2025. “Our athletes have consistently made us proud, and this time will be no different. For every medal they bring home, we will celebrate them,” Otti declared, adding that the gesture aligns with his government’s broader investments in sports development.
Mrs. Mbora Ikana, leader of the National Sports Commission’s Unity Torch delegation, highlighted the torch’s symbolic role in promoting national unity and peace. The torch, which began its nationwide tour on March 25, formally invites Abia to join the multi-sport event.
Abia’s Director of Sports, Mr. Obioma George, noted the state’s robust contingent of 339 athletes competing in 25 out of 40 approved sports, crediting the government’s sustained support for enabling their preparation. The festival will see athletes from across Nigeria vie for honors in a celebration of athletic excellence and camaraderie.
