Abia State is poised to become a golfing destination as prominent indigenes and golf enthusiasts unveil plans to develop a championship-standard golf course in Umuahia.
The multi-billion naira project, spearheaded by the Abia Classic Golf & Country Club forum, brings together influential figures including Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe and Nkechi Nwaogu, as well as South East Development Commission Chairman Emeka Wogu.
A technical committee chaired by renowned architect Benson Ezem has been constituted to develop a master plan for the 308-hectare golf estate, which will feature an 18-hole championship course modeled after elite facilities like Lagos’ Lakowe Lakes.
“We’re creating an exclusive residential golf estate that combines traditional charm with modern amenities and hospitality services,” said Ezem, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects.
The committee will engage government, investors and host communities to ensure the project meets global standards while aligning with Governor Alex Otti’s inclusive development agenda.
“This initiative comes at the right time, given the government’s openness to collaborative development projects,” Ezem noted, adding that the forum aims to unite Abia golfers worldwide behind this transformative vision.
When completed, the facility is expected to position Abia as a premier golf tourism destination while creating employment opportunities and boosting the state’s economy.
