An Air Peace aircraft was temporarily grounded at Asaba International Airport following a collision with an antelope during taxiing, disrupting scheduled flights and leaving the animal dead. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, rendered the aircraft inoperable (designated as Aircraft on Ground/AOG), prompting immediate safety inspections and repairs.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed the event, with spokesperson Michael Achimugu noting such incidents highlight unpredictable challenges in aviation. “While Air Peace engineers are addressing the damage, affected passengers understandably face frustration,” he stated via social media. Achimugu emphasized the airline’s obligation to inform travelers, offer refunds, and provide care, warning of sanctions for non-compliance.
A source within Air Peace disclosed the collision happened upon landing, downplaying its severity: “Procedures were followed—the aircraft was inspected, repaired, and cleared. It wasn’t a major issue.”
The NCAA has launched an investigation into the runway intrusion, vowing to bolster wildlife control measures to prevent recurrences. The authority reassured passengers of stringent safety protocols at Nigerian airports, underscoring commitments to minimizing disruptions from unforeseen events.
Air Peace has yet to issue a formal statement on compensation or revised flight schedules for impacted passengers.
