Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has announced plans to dualise the heavily congested 33, Nkisi and Nkwellele roads in Onitsha, a move aimed at ending the daily traffic nightmare endured by residents and commuters in the area. Speaking in a video that has since gained wide attention, the governor described the persistent gridlock around the 33 axis, where people often spend four to five hours in traffic, as unacceptable and pledged decisive action to resolve it.
Soludo said the proposed dualisation project is part of a broader vision to open up and transform the 33 axis through a more connected and expanded road network, which he believes will lay the foundation for a renewed and more functional Onitsha. According to him, the long-standing traffic lockdown in the area will soon become a thing of the past. He stressed that no one should be forced to lose several hours of their day to traffic congestion, assuring residents that his administration is determined to bring lasting relief.
The governor disclosed that construction is expected to begin early next year, a development that is likely to improve movement, reduce daily stress for commuters and boost economic activities across the area. He also revealed that he personally inspected the affected roads and surrounding neighbourhoods to properly understand the scale of the problem and ensure that planning for the project is thorough before work begins.
The road upgrade is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve traffic flow and enhance the overall outlook of Onitsha and nearby communities. For many residents, the project represents renewed hope that years of frustration on some of the city’s busiest roads may finally come to an end.
