Anambra State government has shut down Community Secondary School Awor-Ezimuzor in Ezinifite, Nnewi South Local Government Area, following a disturbing incident involving the unlawful arrest and torture of the school’s principal and vice principal by the community’s vigilante group. The two school officials were reportedly detained for three days without access to food, water, or toilet facilities.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, issued the closure directive, stressing that the school will remain closed until the safety of its staff and students is fully guaranteed. The decision comes as students were in the middle of their Basic Education Certificate Examination and West African School Certificate Examination, heightening concerns about their wellbeing.
In a statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Mrs. Ifeoma Agbaizu, the Commissioner has summoned an emergency meeting with top education officials and community leaders to address the situation. The closure is part of efforts to de-escalate tensions and ensure a safe learning environment for all students and staff.
The state government has condemned the actions of the vigilante group and vowed to get to the root of the matter. The move has also raised questions about the accountability of the local security outfits and their role in civil matters.
