The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has extended an olive branch to Peter Obi, former governor of the state and presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, urging him to return to the party.
Obi had left the PDP in the buildup to the 2023 polls, citing structural challenges that hindered his presidential aspirations. However, in a communiqué issued after an enlarged State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting in Awka on Thursday, the PDP said its doors remain open to Obi and all former members who left under similar grievances.
Chidi Chidebe, Chairman of the Anambra PDP, who signed the communiqué, stated that the party is now “rejuvenated and restructured” and ready to welcome back Obi and others willing to reunite for the common good. He warned against political alliances with ideologically incompatible formations, stating they often fail to deliver meaningful results.
He also called on voters in Anambra to rally behind the PDP’s candidates in the upcoming elections, especially Jude Ezenwafor and his running mate, Francis Okeke, while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold a transparent and credible electoral process.
The meeting also confirmed the nomination of Clems Ezike as the new national ex-officio member representing Anambra and called on the South-East zonal executive committee, led by Ali Odefa, to transmit the decision to the party’s national leadership.
The statement concluded with praise for the party’s recent national executive meeting held on May 27 and expressed satisfaction with ongoing efforts to resolve internal party disputes.
