The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the re-arrest of Ikemefuna Ossai, a key suspect in the kidnapping and murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha 1 Constituency. The arrest followed weeks of intelligence-led operations after Ossai initially escaped custody, with police tracking him across multiple Nigerian states and a neighboring West African country before apprehending him in Asaba, Delta State, on May 7, 2025.
The re-arrest came to public attention after human rights group HURIDE (Human Rights, Liberty Access, and Peace Defenders’ Foundation) disclosed the operation, crediting a team led by former Anambra SARS officer CSP Ifeanyi Iburu. Police spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed Ossai sustained a leg injury during the arrest while attempting to flee.
Anambra Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu acknowledged operational lapses that allowed Ossai’s prior escape, briefing the late lawmaker’s family and House of Assembly leadership on the development. The command stated that intelligence from Ossai is aiding efforts to apprehend remaining suspects and dismantle the criminal network behind the crime.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to transparency and justice, vowing to intensify operations to ensure the safety of residents.
