The Anambra State Government has dismissed three zonal executives of Onitsha Main Market for alleged corruption and anti-market activities, replacing them with 27 newly appointed leaders. The decision, enacted by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, Evaristus Uba, followed repeated failures by the ousted officials to heed warnings against embezzlement and self-serving practices.
Central Market Chairman Chief Innocent Ezeoha (Ezennia) emphasized the government’s resolve to uphold integrity, accusing the former zonal leaders of neglecting duties and prioritizing personal gain. The market’s governance structure—modeled after Nigeria’s federal system—saw changes only at the zonal level (Zones 1, 2, 3), with Ezeoha pledging to maintain operational frameworks that boosted revenue to ₦325 million in 2024.
During the inauguration, ASMATA President-General Chief Humphrey Anuna (Ajirija) urged the new executives to eschew selfish interests, aligning with Governor Soludo’s reform agenda. The appointees, including Zone 3 Chairman Obinna Okeke Nduakor and Zone 1 Chairman Obidike Chizoba Joseph, vowed to prioritize trader welfare and market harmony.
Former Assistant Secretary Mrs. Otie Chioma advised the new leaders to act fearlessly, stressing that ethical leadership would foster development and customer trust.
