Blessing Adagba, Coordinator of Ngbo Central Development Centre, has been safely released after five harrowing days in captivity following her abduction by armed gunmen last Thursday.
The government official was seized in her hometown of Okposhi Eheku community by unidentified assailants before regaining freedom on Tuesday night through police intervention. Ebonyi State Police Command spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu confirmed the development, revealing that security operatives had arrested one suspect during tracking operations after Adagba’s release.
“Through coordinated efforts, our officers secured the victim’s release on Tuesday night,” Ukandu stated. “We apprehended a key member of the kidnapping syndicate during follow-up operations and are leveraging this breakthrough to pursue other gang members.”
The police spokesperson commended the collaborative efforts between security agencies and local stakeholders that facilitated the successful operation, while reassuring residents of intensified security measures across Ohaukwu LGA.
This incident highlights the persistent security challenges in Ebonyi’s rural communities, coming weeks after similar abductions targeted government officials in the South-East region. Security analysts note a worrying trend of criminals shifting operations to hinterland areas with limited security presence.
Adagba’s family has expressed profound gratitude for her safe return while calling for improved protection of public servants in vulnerable communities. The freed official is currently receiving medical and psychological support following her traumatic experience.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the remaining kidnappers as investigations continue. The Ebonyi State Government has vowed to implement additional security safeguards for grassroots administrators operating in high-risk areas.
