Ebonyi State’s Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, Dr. Ngozi Obichukwu, has confirmed that commercial flight operations will begin at the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Onueke by June 2025. The announcement comes amid reports criticizing the facility’s operational readiness, including claims of flooding in parts of the airport lounge.
Obichukwu dismissed these allegations during a press engagement, emphasizing that chartered flights have been active at the airport. She cited two flights scheduled for the day—one already landed and another expected—as proof of functionality. “False narratives on social media do not reflect reality. Our airport is fully operational, clean, and compliant,” she stated, refuting images circulating online as misrepresentative.
The commissioner clarified that the airport is adhering to Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) guidelines, with a phased approach to operations. After months of chartered services, a one-month commercial trial will commence in June, featuring United Nigeria Airline flights connecting Ebonyi to Lagos and Abuja. Details on ticket purchases will be released soon.
During a site visit, journalists observed a chartered flight (registration N989BC) on the tarmac, underscoring the airport’s activity. Obichukwu stressed that development follows regulatory protocols, with plans to expand services post-trial. “Airports evolve gradually. We’re committed to meeting standards while boosting connectivity for our people,” she added.
