Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has announced a N10,000 cash gift to all workers in the state to mark the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration. Speaking at the event in Abakaliki under the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” Nwifuru praised workers as the “engine room” of governance and pledged sustained support for their welfare. “I remain indebted to Ebonyi workers. Under my watch, they will continue to symbolize excellence. Today’s celebration reflects your indispensable role in nation-building,” he said, vowing to address challenges faced by workers and promote a conducive environment for productivity.
The state’s organized labor unions, led by NLC Chairman Prof. Ogugua Egwu and TUC Chairman Mr. Chidi Igboji, commended Nwifuru for implementing the N75,000 minimum wage ahead of other states. However, they urged the governor to expedite the deployment of shuttle buses to the State Secretariat and Centenary City to ease transportation hardships. The unions also highlighted the urgent need for affordable housing projects amid rising rental costs, improved pensions for retirees, and better-equipped government offices.
Responding to the demands, Nwifuru reiterated his administration’s commitment to partnership with workers, stating, “We must unite as partners in progress for a stronger Ebonyi.”
