  • ECCIMA Optimistic Despite Slow Start to 37th Enugu Trade Fair

The 37th Enugu International Trade Fair officially commenced on Saturday, albeit with a subdued atmosphere as many exhibitors were still in the process of erecting their displays. Organized by the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), the event opened at the Permanent Trade Fair Complex under the theme “Empowering MSMEs for Global Competitiveness.”

Despite the recent inauguration of a state-of-the-art 3,000-square-metre premium exhibition hall, the venue saw limited activity on its opening day. Many regular participants were observed constructing custom tents and specialized stands rather than utilizing the newly available hall.

Economic headwinds have also impacted the fair’s initial momentum. Local commuting fares in Enugu have surged by approximately 20 percent, a spike attributed to rising petroleum prices. The increase in fuel costs is linked to the ongoing global energy crisis following escalated geopolitical tensions between Israel, the U.S., and Iran. These rising costs are expected to serve as a significant barrier for potential shoppers and local visitors.

Responding to the quiet start, ECCIMA Director General Uche Mba noted that the initial slow pace is consistent with previous years. He expressed confidence that the tempo would increase as more businesses finalize their setups and the official opening ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, approaches.

“Over the years, the first day might look dull, but the momentum typically picks up in subsequent days,” Mba explained. “There is nothing unusual about today’s activity level compared to the opening stages of previous editions.”

The 10-day event, which runs through March 30, is designed to provide a platform for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises to showcase their products and connect with international markets. To mitigate the impact of high transport costs, the Chamber has arranged for free daily shuttle services from major hubs in Enugu, including Abakpa, Emene, Gariki, and the Holy Ghost bus terminals.
