Enugu State Government has announced that the Enugu City International Marathon, a World Athletics-certified event, will become an annual fixture following its inaugural edition scheduled for Today. The announcement was made during a World Press Conference in Enugu on Friday, where State Commissioner for Sports Lloyd Ekweremadu Jr. revealed Governor Peter Mbah’s approval to institutionalize the marathon, citing its potential to boost the state’s economy and engage youths through mass participation.
The maiden edition, set to take place across major streets in the Coal City, will feature over 3,000 athletes competing in 42km and 10km categories, with Governor Mbah himself participating in the 10km race. Ekweremadu emphasized the choice of a marathon for its inclusivity and capacity to mobilize large numbers of participants, aligning with the administration’s sports development roadmap.
Nilayo Sports Management Company, the event’s consultant, lauded the state’s commitment to sports investment. Managing Director Yetunde Olopade praised Governor Mbah’s strategic vision, noting his efforts to position Enugu as a sports powerhouse in Nigeria. The press conference drew high-profile attendees, including Solomon Ogba (Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee), Tonobok Okowa (President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria), and Nollywood icon Nkem Owo, underscoring the event’s significance as the first of its kind in Southeastern Nigeria.
With international and local athletes set to compete, organizers aim to cement Enugu’s reputation on the global athletics stage while fostering community spirit ahead of the state’s hosting of the 2026 National Sports Festival.
