Enugu State is set to make history this weekend as it hosts its first-ever international marathon, the Coal City Marathon, on May 3, 2025. The World Athletics-certified event, organized by Nilayo Sports Management, aims to become the largest road race in Southeastern Nigeria, attracting over 100 elite athletes from across the globe, including top Nigerian runners. The marathon underscores Nigeria’s growing reputation as a hub for world-class road races, building on the success of events like the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon and the Abeokuta 10km race.
The event is designed to showcase Enugu’s rich cultural heritage and scenic landscapes, with a meticulously planned route that highlights the city’s landmarks. Beyond elite competitors, the marathon has drawn amateur runners and fitness enthusiasts eager to participate in the international spectacle. Preparations are in full swing, with the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and other venues revitalized ahead of the race. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah emphasized the marathon’s role in positioning the city as a premier destination for tourism and commerce in the Southeast. “This race tells our unique story and invites the world to experience Enugu’s beauty and vibrant culture,” he stated.
The event also serves as a precursor to the 2026 National Sports Festival, which Enugu will host, marking the second time a Southeastern state stages the festival since Imo in 1998. Commissioner for Youth and Sports Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu highlighted the state’s commitment to reviving its sporting legacy, calling on residents to support the athletes and embrace the historic occasion. “We are ready to make history with a world-class event that reflects our capabilities,” he said.
Adding to the festivities, the marathon will feature live entertainment, including a performance by Nigerian music star Kcee. Nilayo Sports Management CEO Yetunde Olopade described the event as a celebration of sport, culture, and community unity, aligning with Enugu’s vision to boost local pride and global recognition. With the state government’s full backing, the Coal City Marathon is poised to elevate Enugu’s profile on the international athletics stage while fostering fitness, tourism, and economic growth.
