The Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area, Hon. Beloved-Dan Anike, has announced the construction of 40 roads across the council area, equipped with solar-powered streetlights, to enhance security and improve infrastructure.
Speaking in Enugu on Thursday, Mr. Anike explained that the projects, some of which are in partnership with the Enugu State Government, have significantly improved access across the local government, particularly in previously underdeveloped or isolated areas.
“These roads traverse farmlands, mini-forests, and remote zones which were once inaccessible,” he said. “Their rehabilitation has effectively shut down potential hideouts for criminal elements and opened up new economic and social opportunities for residents.”
According to him, 12 of the ongoing road projects are located in the Emene axis, while seven are ongoing in the Nike area. A major highlight is the ongoing construction of a 10-kilometer road leading to Awhum Waterfall in neighboring Udi LGA—an effort spearheaded by the state government.
Mr. Anike said the Awhum Waterfall Road would be fitted with solar lights and surveillance cameras to boost safety and tourism. He described the project as a strategic development that would drive local economic growth and attract visitors from Nike Lake Hotel and beyond.
He revealed that a private investor, Landmark Ltd., plans to develop a golf course along the Awhum route as well as a hydrophilic residential estate, with each housing unit featuring an extended garden space for farming. Additionally, the council is planning Farm Estates in all 12 political wards to promote agriculture and food security.
“These developments are transforming the Awhum corridor into a hub of modern, secure, and serene living,” Anike stated.
To address growing land-related tensions caused by the area’s rapid urbanization, Mr. Anike said he has established a Land Mediation Centre. The center, comprising traditional rulers, community elders, legal experts, and chartered mediators, aims to resolve disputes before they escalate.
“As a chartered mediator and former commissioner with experience in settling land conflicts, I understand the importance of proactive engagement in land administration,” he noted.
The chairman commended Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to ensuring maximum security across the state, especially through the deployment of security surveillance systems, searchlights, and the distribution of 150 security vehicles fitted with real-time monitoring cameras.
He also praised the collaborative efforts of the Nigerian Army, Police, Air Force, Forest Guards, Neighbourhood Watch, and other local vigilance groups in keeping Enugu East safe.
“We remain thankful to God for the peace and calm we enjoy and pray continually for the safety of all, especially our security personnel,” Anike concluded.
