Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the passing of football icon Christian Chukwu, describing the former Super Eagles captain and coach as “a national treasure who united Nigerians through sport.”
In an emotional tribute released on Saturday, Governor Mbah expressed profound sorrow over the death of the 74-year-old football legend, who breathed his last earlier in the day.
“It is with heavy heart that I receive the news of Chairman Christian Chukwu’s passing. This loss cuts deep – not just for us in Enugu, his beloved home state, but for all Nigerians and indeed the African football community.
Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer; he was a unifying force who transcended ethnic and religious divides through his brilliance on the pitch. As captain, he led the Green Eagles to our historic 1980 AFCON triumph, gifting Nigeria one of its proudest sporting moments.
His legacy extended beyond playing – coaching both our Super Eagles and Kenya’s Harambee Stars with distinction, while mentoring generations at Rangers International, the club that became synonymous with his name.
Though Chairman has taken his final bow, the memories he created and the national pride he inspired will endure forever. On behalf of Ndi Enugu, I extend deepest condolences to his family, the Nigerian sports community, and all whose lives he touched.
May God grant his soul eternal rest and comfort all who mourn this irreplaceable legend.”
The football community continues to pour in tributes for the man affectionately called “Chairman,” whose contributions shaped Nigerian football’s golden era.
