The Enugu State Government has announced a massive infrastructural undertaking, approving the construction and reconstruction of 1,022 urban roads, a move intended to fulfill Governor Peter Mbah’s pledge to ensure every road within the Enugu metropolis is paved before the conclusion of his first term in office. This major resolution was reached during the latest meeting of the Enugu State Executive Council.

Briefing journalists following the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, alongside the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Osita Okoh, and the Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry, Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, confirmed the infrastructural agenda. The Executive Council also approved the comprehensive Business Enabling Reform Action Plan for 2026 and greenlit a series of events for a memorable “Detty December” to mark the forthcoming Christmas and New Year festivities.

Engr. Okoh shed further light on the expansive road project, emphasizing that the approval was timed to maximize the dry season window. This strategic timing ensures that contracts can be awarded and contractors mobilized to various sites starting in January 2026. He detailed the scope of the project, explaining that this third phase of road intervention will cover all remaining unpaved roads across the Enugu metropolis, significantly building upon the successes of the first and second phases which collectively involved over 230 road projects.

The Commissioner for Works specified that the new roads span numerous layouts and zones, including New GRA, Old GRA, Emene, Abakpa, Thinkers Corner, Airport Corner, Upper Meniru in Awkunanaw, Idaw River Layout, Gariki, Maryland, Achara Layout, Uwani, One Day and Upper One Day, Trans Ekulu, Independence Layout Phase I and II, Coal Camp Zone, Pocket Layout, and the Ogui and Asata areas. This all-encompassing approach aims to completely address the uncovered road network within the state capital.

In a separate but equally significant development, Dr. Ogbu-Nwobodo elaborated on the newly approved Business Enabling Reform Action Plan for 2026. He stated that the plan is designed to further bolster Enugu’s business-friendly ecosystem, following the state’s remarkable improvement in the national ease of doing business survey where it leaped from a low 36th position to an impressive 6th. The Commissioner highlighted that this significant rise translates directly to increased capital inflow and more robust engagement with the private sector. By enhancing the regulatory environment through transparent and predictable processes in land administration, tax administration, permit issuance, and overall business-to-government interfaces, the state expects to attract greater investment and accelerate economic growth.
