Enugu State is set to make history with the launch of Nigeria’s first zipline and Africa’s longest canopy walkway, as the government approves a N30 billion plan to transform the state into a major tourism destination. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mrs. Ugochi Madueke, following the State Executive Council’s approval of the first phase of the tourism development programme, valued at over N13 billion.
At the heart of this ambitious initiative is the Nsude Pyramid Canopy Walkway—a 600-meter-long stretch starting from Ugwu Uto and sloping down over 500 meters to the base of the ancient Nsude pyramids. Once completed, it will become the longest canopy walkway in Nigeria and the first of its kind in the Southeast.
In addition to this, the government is investing in a range of other iconic attractions. The Pine Forest Hotel, a popular spot for photoshoots, is being enhanced with floral landscaping, rotundas, and Nigeria’s first zipline, measuring 300 meters. On Okpatu Hill, a towering 50-meter cross will be mounted on a 15-story building, reaching a total height of 630 meters above sea level—making it the tallest cross in Africa. Plans are also underway for a hilltop observatory and restaurant at 530 meters above sea level, surrounded by traditional rondavels for relaxation.
The Awhum waterfall, known for its mystical charm, will see the addition of new canopy walkways and a boardwalk to improve visitor experience. Akwuke Beach and Atakwu Waterpark will offer food courts, experience centres, and renewable energy facilities. The Ovu Lake Golf and Resort will provide a golf course, boat jetty, and host world-class events in a serene, eco-friendly setting.
Earlier in 2024, the state engaged top tourism consultants, Ambassador Ikechi Uko and Queen Ebele Enemchukwu, to inspect over 15 key sites and design a comprehensive development strategy. Their recommendations, after thorough vetting by Governor Peter Mbah and his team, laid the foundation for this first phase of projects. With this massive investment, Enugu State is taking bold steps to reimagine tourism in Nigeria and offer experiences that blend adventure, culture, and sustainability.
