Enugu State is poised to launch a suite of transformative projects this May, including the state-owned airline, the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit system, and the new ultramodern transport terminals, as part of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s second-anniversary milestones. Commissioners revealed the plans following a State Executive Council meeting, outlining ambitious initiatives spanning transportation, tourism, sports, and youth development.
The state’s new airline, Enugu Air, will commence operations with three aircraft, two already on-site and a third arriving by month’s end. Complementing this, 100 CNG-powered buses—50 stationed at Okpara Square and 50 more en route—will hit the roads by May 29, alongside newly built terminals at Holy Ghost, Gariki, Abakpa, and Nsukka. Transport Commissioner Dr. Obi Ozor also announced plans for an electric and CNG automotive manufacturing plant and a Smart Transport Programme to deploy 2,000 electric vehicles within 150 days.
In tourism, the state unveiled a phased investment strategy targeting iconic sites like Awhum Waterfall, Nsude Pyramid, and Ngwo Pine Forest. Highlights include first Southeast canopy walkway (600 meters), a 300-meter zipline, and the Cross of Hope—a 50-meter structure atop a 580-meter peak with a 15-floor elevator. Upgraded facilities at Akwuke/Atakkwu Waterpark and Ovu Lake Golf Resort will feature experience centers, food courts, and renewable energy, supported by dedicated tour buses for visitor mobility.
Ahead of hosting the 2026 National Sports Festival, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village will undergo total renovation starting June. Youth and Sports Commissioner Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu confirmed the upcoming launch of an Animation Lab for young creatives and an August 12 empowerment initiative for 2,100 trainees, timed to coincide with International Youth Day.
