Former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye, has unveiled a new political platform known as The Progressives Group, bringing together members from various political parties, including the APC, PDP, SDP, ADC, and Labour Party.
At the official launch, Nwoye explained that the new movement was born out of increasing calls from politically disenchanted individuals who resonated with his leadership style and were eager for a new political home. Though he resigned from the APC, he emphasized that he remains actively involved in politics and is now focused on championing a platform that promotes good governance across Enugu State and beyond.
The group was launched in Enugu North Senatorial District, particularly in Nsukka, chosen for its history of progressive engagement and as the initial stronghold of the APC in the state. According to Nwoye, the group already has grassroots structures in all 105 political wards and six local government areas of the district.
Prominent conveners of the group include Dr. Mrs. Oby Ajih, former APC House of Reps candidate, and Chief Obodoeze Ocho, while Hon. Tony Ibekwe leads the Enugu West arm. The turnout at the event was significant, despite invitations being limited to two delegates per ward, reflecting what Nwoye called “the hunger for a new political direction.”
He criticized the current APC leadership in the state for alienating members through suspensions and expulsions, noting that The Progressives Group would serve as a political sanctuary for such individuals. He stressed that the group is not interested in forming a parallel government but in supporting any administration that prioritizes development and public welfare.
While the group has not yet aligned with any particular party, Nwoye confirmed that consultations are ongoing and that a strategic decision will be made in due course.
