Gas supply to the 188MW Geometric Power Plant in Aba, Abia State, has been fully restored after a three-day suspension caused by technical issues in the gas gathering facilities of an indigenous oil and gas company in Rivers State.
Power generation resumed Wednesday night, with one of the plant’s 47MW turbines delivering 25MW by 9:02 pm, according to Dike Ejike, a mechanical engineer and power consultant.
“Generation output has been steadily increasing,” Ejike said. “By 11 am today, it reached 37.44MW, and by 2 pm, it climbed to 39.5MW.”
The restoration has significantly improved electricity supply across nine local government areas in Abia State, with total available power now nearing 65MW. This includes 25MW received from the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) to supplement Geometric Power’s output.
“More homes, businesses, and industries are now receiving stable power as generation continues to ramp up,” Ejike added.
Industry experts have commended Heirs Energies, operator of Oil Mining Lease (OML) 17, for its swift response in resolving the gas supply disruption. Engr. Cliff Eneh, a former PHCN executive and power consultant, praised the company’s technical team for their round-the-clock efforts during the Easter holiday period.
“The Heirs Energies team demonstrated world-class professionalism typically associated with international oil companies,” Eneh noted. “Their commitment to resolving this issue promptly ensured minimal disruption to power supply in Aba during this critical period.”
Eneh expressed confidence in the capability of Nigerian engineers, stating that the incident proved their competence in handling complex energy challenges. The restoration of gas supply has brought relief to the Aba business community, which relies heavily on stable electricity for industrial and commercial activities.
The Geometric Power Plant remains a critical infrastructure in the Aba ring-fenced area, providing dedicated power to the industrial hub and surrounding communities.
