The Ebonyi State Government has launched a new digitally-enabled taxi service known as EBOCAB, aimed at providing a safe, efficient, and regulated transport alternative for residents. The initiative, officially flagged off by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru on Tuesday the 27th of may in Abakaliki, is designed to address growing concerns over harassment, theft, and intimidation reportedly associated with tricycle operators, commonly known as keke riders.
Speaking during the launch ceremony held at the EBOCAB Corporate Headquarters along Ogoja Road near the Ecumenical Centre, Governor Nwifuru explained that the initiative became necessary following persistent complaints from road users, particularly around the state’s International Market.
He stated that EBOCAB offers a smart and cost-effective transport solution that leverages technology to enhance safety and convenience. The system is app-based, allowing commuters to book rides and connect with drivers in under five minutes using their mobile phones.

The state government has deployed a fleet of 60 new pick-up vans and 30 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) under the scheme. A portion of the vehicles is designated for air travelers using the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, ensuring that mobility services are available for both local and inter-city movements.
General Manager of EBOCAB, Henry Okemiri, called on residents to download the mobile application “EBOCAB” to access the service. He emphasized the importance of embracing the new system, describing it as a step forward in achieving a modern, crime-free transportation network.
The event drew commendations from several stakeholders, including former Minister of Power and Steel, Chief Godwin Ogbaga, who lauded the governor’s initiative. He said the cab system would not only offer comfort and reliability but also contribute to economic growth and public security.
“Citizens of this state can now enter brand new vehicles with air conditioning and enjoy safe travel to their destinations. Governor Nwifuru clearly means well for the people,” Ogbaga said.
State Commissioner for Transportation, Collins Igboke, also urged residents to embrace the digital platform. He noted that the tracking capabilities embedded in the EBOCAB system would enhance law enforcement efforts and reduce crime associated with unregulated transportation services.
