Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State is poised to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following a sweeping restructuring of the party’s leadership in the state by the National Working Committee (NWC). The move, which has sent ripples through Enugu’s political landscape, marks a significant realignment ahead of future elections.
The APC national leadership on Thursday announced the dissolution of the party’s existing structure in Enugu and appointed Dr. Ben Nwoye as the new caretaker chairman. Nwoye reportedly met with Governor Mbah earlier in the day in what party insiders described as a “strategic reconciliation and realignment meeting,” signaling the governor’s imminent entry into the ruling party.
This political shift comes shortly after the resignation of Uche Nnaji, the former Minister of Science and Technology and APC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Enugu. Nnaji’s exit, triggered by a certificate controversy, is widely viewed as removing the final obstacle to Mbah’s defection. He had long been seen as a key figure opposing efforts to bring the governor into the APC.
With Nnaji’s departure and the dissolution of the state executive committee, Governor Mbah is expected to take on a central leadership role within the APC in Enugu.
A formal declaration event confirming Mbah’s move to the APC is anticipated in the coming days, as both state and national figures prepare for what could be one of the most consequential political realignments in recent Enugu history.
