Prince Ugochukwu Orji, the immigration officer credited with apprehending the alleged Enugu native doctor involved in ritual killings, has been awarded ₦5 million by prominent industrialist and philanthropist Chief Ebuka Onunkwo.
The recognition came during a ceremony at Onunkwo’s residence in Ihembosi, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. Onunkwo, who is also vying for the Anambra South senatorial seat in the forthcoming by-election under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), praised Orji for his integrity and courage.
Orji was on duty at the Seme Border last month when he intercepted the suspect, identified online as “Ichie Billion,” who was attempting to flee Nigeria into the Republic of Benin on a motorcycle. Recognizing him from viral reports and online images, Orji initiated a discreet investigation, ultimately confirming the suspect’s identity and arresting him.
While presenting the ₦5 million cheque on behalf of Seahorse Lubricant Industries Ltd., which he chairs, Onunkwo said the reward was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility and aimed at promoting integrity in public service.
“Nigeria still has men of honour,” Onunkwo said. “Ugochukwu stood in the gap when it mattered. In a system where many are tempted to sell their conscience, he chose to uphold the law. Seahorse is giving him this reward not just for his bravery but to inspire a culture of truth and accountability in our nation.”
Onunkwo urged the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) to formally acknowledge Orji’s action, saying his honesty deserves institutional recognition.
Recounting the arrest, Orji said the suspect initially denied being the wanted man, claiming to be his brother. “He offered me bribes ranging from ₦3 million to ₦15 million,” Orji revealed. “I pretended to play along in order to stall him. After confirming his identity with my superiors, I handcuffed him and recovered incriminating voice notes from his phone.”
