The Imo State Government has announced the reopening of all nursery, primary, and secondary schools in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, following the successful containment of a recent diphtheria outbreak that led to school closures and the tragic loss of several children.
Health authorities have confirmed that the outbreak has been effectively brought under control, allowing for the safe return of students to classrooms. Acting on this assurance, the Chairman of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Council, Barr. Iheukwumere Alaribe, disclosed that academic activities will resume on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
In a statement issued from his office on Sunday, June 15, Alaribe outlined a series of health and safety protocols designed to protect students and staff. Chief among them is a requirement for all returning students to present valid proof of diphtheria vaccination. School principals and administrators have also been directed to report any health-related incidents promptly to the appropriate authorities.
Alaribe tasked the local education secretary and heads of schools with enforcing strict compliance to these measures, urging all stakeholders to prioritize the safety and well-being of pupils.
He commended health workers for their swift response and tireless efforts in containing the disease and called for continued vigilance from parents, teachers, and the wider community to prevent a recurrence.
