The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has initiated a disciplinary probe against Abia State Governor Alex Otti over alleged anti-party activities, following Otti’s public criticism of Abure, whom he accused of mismanaging the party. The decision was ratified during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where the party also reaffirmed its confidence in Abure’s leadership and the National Working Committee (NWC) elected at the 2024 National Convention. A communiqué issued after the meeting announced the formation of a disciplinary committee chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, with members including Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Barr. Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Barr. Callistus Ihejiagwa, tasked with investigating Otti and other members accused of undermining party unity.
The NEC praised the Supreme Court’s recent ruling upholding the authority of political parties to enforce internal discipline, citing its April 4, 2025, judgment as a validation of the party’s constitutional processes. While extending an “olive branch” to aggrieved members, the faction urged reconciliation to strengthen the party’s prospects in future elections. Governor Otti’s remarks, which included disparaging comments about Abure’s leadership, have deepened rifts within the party, prompting calls for solidarity. The Labour Party reiterated its commitment to democratic principles and national unity, framing the disciplinary action as a step toward organizational cohesion amid ongoing internal strife.
