A law student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has died in a tragic incident that has stirred outrage within the university community and beyond. Chioma Isabella Ajana, a final-year student of law and resident of Elmada Hostel, reportedly lost her life after being denied access to her insulin medication due to a lost room key.
According to accounts from fellow students, Chioma and her roommates misplaced their room key and approached the hostel management for a spare. The hostel mistress, identified as Madam Bright, allegedly insisted that a replacement key could only be provided upon payment of ₦120,000, with each of the three occupants required to contribute ₦40,000. Despite explaining that the money could not be raised immediately and that Chioma was diabetic and in urgent need of her medication, their appeals were allegedly dismissed.
Chioma’s condition deteriorated rapidly. She collapsed on Sunday, July 6, and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel attempted to stabilize her. Sadly, she passed away on Wednesday, July 9, prompting an outpouring of grief and anger from the student body.
Students of the institution have taken to social media to demand justice. Many have described the incident as a case of gross negligence, questioning how a demand for payment could take precedence over a student’s life-threatening medical emergency.
Attempts to contact the university administration and hostel authorities for comments have so far been unsuccessful.
