The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, announced via his X handle that the agency had taken swift action against an incident of illegal waste disposal in Lekki Phase 1.
According to Gbadegesin, LAWMA was alerted in the early hours of Saturday, May 18, 2025, by the Chairman of the Lekki Estate Residents Association (LERA) about unauthorized dumping of waste along Durosimi-Etti Street.
A white Ford van, bearing Abuja license plates GWA 136E, was caught in the act of indiscriminately offloading refuse. Further investigation linked the vehicle to DONALD Restaurant, a nightlife venue located on Road 14 in the estate and allegedly connected to nightlife influencer Cubana Chief Priest.
LERA’s Chief Security Officer apprehended the individuals at the scene and detained them at the LERA Secretariat. Reports revealed that the suspects attempted to bribe the security personnel with ₦100,000, but the offer was firmly declined.
LAWMA’s Monitoring and Compliance Team promptly arrived at the scene, took custody of the suspects, and sealed the restaurant for serious environmental infractions in violation of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
Gbadegesin confirmed that the suspects would face prosecution, reaffirming LAWMA’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental breaches.
“LAWMA remains steadfast in enforcing environmental laws across Lagos. We urge all residents and businesses to follow proper waste disposal practices. Maintaining a clean and livable city is a collective responsibility,” he stated.
