A General Court Martial at the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division in Enugu has sentenced Private Adamu Mohammed to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Hauwa Ali, while Private Abubakar Yusuf received a 10-year prison term for robbing a mall in Enugu. Presided over by Brigadier General Sadisu Buhari, the court found Mohammed guilty under Section 106(a) of the Armed Forces Act after reviewing evidence, his service record, and defense pleas for leniency. Yusuf’s conviction under Section 107(1)(b) followed his involvement in the robbery, though the court cited Section 140(3) for the reduced sentence due to lack of unanimous agreement on a harsher penalty.
The trials, concluded on April 25, 2025, stemmed from a court inaugurated in February 2025 by Major-General Oluyemi Olatoye to address disciplinary breaches. Lieutenant-Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu, acting Army spokesperson, emphasized the sentences await confirmation by military authorities and reiterated the Army’s commitment to discipline, ethics, and justice, stating that isolated misconduct does not reflect institutional values.
