The Nigerian Army has launched a formal investigation into claims that soldiers deployed for security operations in Ebonyi State assaulted a police officer monitoring a traditional leadership election. The incident, captured in a viral social media video, allegedly occurred on May 1 in Mgbom N’Achara Community, Ohaozara Local Government Area.
Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, ordered a “thorough and transparent” probe to determine the circumstances surrounding the soldiers’ conduct at the event. In a statement released Monday by Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, the Army emphasized its commitment to professionalism and accountability.
“The Nigerian Army upholds the highest standards in discharging its constitutional duties,” Anele stated, assuring the public that findings would be made public and any personnel found culpable would face sanctions under military regulations. She urged citizens to remain calm and avoid speculation, reiterating the Army’s dedication to collaboration with civil authorities and its role in maintaining national stability.
