The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has launched a sensitization campaign in Ebonyi State to educate residents about diphtheria, following confirmed outbreaks in nearby states including Abia, Enugu, and Imo. Though no case has been reported yet in Ebonyi, the agency says the campaign is a proactive measure aimed at saving lives and preventing a potential outbreak.
Speaking in Abakaliki, NOA State Director Theophilus Nwokpor said the campaign is focused on rural communities where awareness is often low. He explained that diphtheria is a serious and highly contagious infection caused by bacteria. It primarily affects the throat, nose, and skin, and can lead to severe complications if not treated early.
Nwokpor highlighted that the disease spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated objects. He stressed the importance of vaccination as the most effective prevention, urging parents to ensure their children are fully immunized. He also advised adults to get booster doses where necessary.
The director noted that the campaign would also educate people on how to recognize symptoms and take quick action by visiting health facilities if they suspect an infection. He emphasized that early detection and treatment are critical in saving lives.
Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers (COMOs) have already begun taking the message to local government areas and development centres across the state. The campaign also encourages good hygiene practices and community cooperation to prevent any possible outbreak in the region.
