Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed mixed emotions following the Unity Cup match between Nigeria and Jamaica held at Brentford Stadium, UK.
In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi described the encounter, which ended 2-2 before Nigeria triumphed on penalties, as more than just a football match. He called it a moving tribute to the strength, resilience, and unity of Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
“Sports remain a powerful force that brings us together, inspires national pride, and reminds us of our shared aspirations,” Obi stated. He commended the event’s organizers for reviving the Unity Cup and for showcasing Nigerian culture and the talents of young athletes on a global stage.
However, the celebratory mood was abruptly tempered by news of a tragic road accident involving 22 members of the Kano State sports delegation. The athletes were returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State when their vehicle reportedly crashed, leaving many feared dead.
Obi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering prayers and condolences to the bereaved families, the National Sports Commission, and the Kano State Government.
“While we celebrate the triumphs that unite us, we must also mourn the losses that humble us,” he said. “May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
