Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for the immediate release of 15-year-old Quadri Yusuf Alabi, who has been detained at Kirikiri Correctional Centre for more than three months without trial.
Alabi first gained national attention in 2023 when a photo of him standing boldly in front of Obi’s campaign convoy in Lagos went viral. The image became symbolic of Nigerian youth’s hope for change. However, the teenager now finds himself entangled in a legal battle that has kept him behind bars since January.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi expressed deep concern over Alabi’s prolonged detention and urged authorities to respect the rule of law.
“I was made aware of the predicament of young Quadri Yusuf Alabi, who has been detained for over three months without trial. He only appeared in court for the first time in March and remains in custody,” Obi stated.
The former presidential candidate revealed that he had engaged human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong to take up the case and push for Alabi’s release.
“I sincerely appeal to the police and other government agencies to always operate within the law and stop weaponizing our youths, who should be nurtured to contribute positively to nation-building,” Obi added.
Alabi was reportedly arrested after local youths in his community accused him of being a notorious fighter and thief. However, the teenager maintains his innocence, claiming the accusations stem from a personal vendetta.
Sources say the accusers were angered after Alabi received cash gifts from Obi and socialite Cubana Chief Priest following his viral moment at the campaign rally. They allegedly demanded a share of the money, and when Alabi’s family refused, the accusations followed.
The teenager was eventually charged with fighting and stealing. He made his first court appearance on March 27, with the next hearing scheduled for April 28.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong confirmed Obi’s intervention and assured that efforts are being intensified to secure Alabi’s freedom.
“I commend Mr. Obi’s interest in this case. We are working to ensure justice is served and that Quadri regains his freedom soon,” Effiong posted on X.
