Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi clarified his political motivations during a Seventh Day Adventist Church service in Umuahia on Saturday, marking Governor Alex Otti’s two-year anniversary in office. Addressing congregants, Obi stated, “I am not desperate to be a President, I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” emphasizing his commitment to national progress over personal ambition. He urged Nigerians to pray for leaders like Otti to prioritize public good over self-interest, stressing the challenges of governance when pursuing ethical reforms.
Obi lauded Otti’s transformative impact in Abia, asserting that meaningful change “does not require decades” but decisive leadership. “People talk of eight, ten, or twenty years, but one day can make a difference,” he remarked, commending the governor’s infrastructural and policy strides. Governor Otti, in his response, attributed his administration’s achievements to divine guidance and thanked Obi, the legislature, judiciary, and religious communities for their support. “Our modest progress is God’s work,” Otti stated, pledging to sustain reforms aimed at repositioning Abia.
