A joint operation by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Army, and Nigerian Navy has led to the discovery of an illegal artisanal refinery and unauthorized petrol station in Anambra State. The illicit facilities, located at Y-Junction, Nkwelle Ezunaka, in Oyi Local Government Area, were raided following credible intelligence on suspected petroleum-related crimes.
NSCDC Anambra State Commandant Olatunde Maku confirmed the operation, stating that personnel stormed the site at approximately 1:35 p.m. on Saturday, arresting one suspect while others fled. Security forces recovered 49 kegs of 25 liters each containing suspected adulterated Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), four 200-liter drums of alleged Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and a pumping machine. The apprehended individual has been transferred to the NSCDC for prosecution.
Maku reiterated the corps’ resolve to eliminate illegal petroleum activities in the state, warning operators of clandestine refineries and individuals impersonating PROTEAN personnel to cease operations or face legal consequences. “We are closely monitoring criminal elements disguising illegal activities under fraudulent fronts or operating openly within the oil and gas sector. Enforcement will escalate if they persist,” he declared.
The commandant praised the collaboration with the military, emphasizing a unified stance against economic sabotage. “This operation underscores our commitment to working with sister agencies to protect national assets. The NSCDC, as the lead agency in combating illegal petroleum dealings, assures residents that robust strategies are in place to dismantle such networks,” Maku added.
Authorities vowed to pursue fleeing suspects and prosecute all involved, urging the public to report suspicious activities.
