Abia North Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has revealed that political leaders across Nigeria’s southeast have reached a consensus to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in 2027. The former Abia governor made this declaration after hosting a crucial meeting of Abia APC stakeholders at his Abuja residence over the weekend.
The gathering brought together prominent figures including Minister of State for Labour Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, APC National Welfare Secretary Donatus Nwankpa, and former Finance Commissioner Obinna Oriaku, among other party chieftains. Kalu emphasized that the region’s political heavyweights have set aside differences to strengthen the APC’s position in Abia and deliver massive support for Tinubu’s second term.
“President Tinubu charged us during the last NEC meeting to reconcile and unite our party structures,” Kalu told journalists. “We’re executing this mandate vigorously because when our constituents align with the center, they benefit tremendously from federal projects and programs.” The senator pointed to visible federal interventions in Abia North as evidence of what the entire state could gain through closer alignment with the ruling party.
Kalu disclosed that Tinubu had expressed concerns about Abia’s political landscape during their recent meeting, prompting his commitment to reunite the state’s APC faction. “I assured Mr. President we possess the capacity to bring Abia back as a united, indivisible entity within the APC fold,” he stated, warning that “those who refuse to join this peace initiative may live to regret their decision.”
The former governor positioned himself as a pivotal figure in the southeast’s political realignment, boasting of his track record as both governor and senator. “The class of 1999 governors are strategic thinkers and executors,” Kalu remarked, referencing his peer group’s influence. “When we plan, we deliver.”
Most significantly, Kalu revealed the emerging regional consensus: “The southeast has resolved to support President Tinubu’s second term. This isn’t just my view – it’s the position developing across the zone.” He challenged skeptics to “mark my words,” asserting that the region’s political calculus recognizes the advantages of stronger ties with the center.
As part of this mobilization effort, Kalu disclosed he’s undertaking quiet diplomacy across southeast state houses with presidential authorization, working to cement the region’s support ahead of the 2027 elections. This revelation suggests coordinated high-level negotiations are underway to reshape the southeast’s political allegiances in what could significantly alter Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
