Amid growing unease over the direction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), top party leaders have gathered in Abuja to deliberate on the way forward for the opposition party.
The meeting, which was hosted by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has in attendance serving PDP governors, former governors, and other senior stakeholders.
Discussions are centered on pressing issues threatening party unity, including the recent wave of defections, the unresolved National Secretary position, the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting tentatively scheduled for May 27, and preparations for the party’s national convention in August.
Governors present at the meeting include Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Peter Mbah (Enugu), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).
Also present are several former governors, including Ahmed Makarfi (Kaduna), Bukola Saraki (Kwara), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Achike Udenwa (Imo), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia).
The meeting is expected to help the party address internal divisions and reposition ahead of future political contests.
