A speeding Toyota Highlander crashed into a stationary Mack truck loaded with iron scrap on Wednesday, killing two members of the same family and injuring others along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway in Umuahia, Abia State. The incident occurred at Amibo Ubakala when the light green SUV, traveling from the Enugu direction, rammed under the parked truck at high speed, instantly claiming the lives of the driver and his teenage daughter.
Eyewitnesses reported that other occupants of the vehicle sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, by Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials who extracted the wreckage. The bodies of the deceased were deposited in a mortuary, while the truck driver, Gideon Effiong Udofia, has been detained as police investigations begin.
FRSC Abia Sector Commander, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed the crash on Thursday, attributing preliminary findings to possible over-speeding or driver fatigue. She stated, “Our personnel responded swiftly to rescue survivors and ensure they received urgent medical care.” Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the tragic collision.
