The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Abia State has applauded Governor Alex Otti for approving full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for doctors, a move described as restoring “long-awaited pay parity” with federal counterparts.
In a statement issued Wednesday in Umuahia, NMA Chairman Dr. Ezinwa Ezuruike hailed the April 29 announcement as proof of Otti’s “visionary leadership” and commitment to strengthening healthcare systems. “This decision underscores the governor’s deep appreciation of the sacrifices and critical contributions of healthcare workers,” Ezuruike stated, noting the alignment of Abia’s pay scale with federal standards.
The association also praised the governor’s concurrent approval to recruit 771 new healthcare workers across multiple specialties, calling it a “bold and timely step” toward revitalizing the state’s health sector. Ezuruike emphasized that the recruitment drive, coupled with the salary adjustment, would bolster service delivery and staff retention.
“We see this gesture not just as a fulfilment of a promise, but as a call to renewed dedication and excellence,” he said, reaffirming doctors’ pledge to prioritize quality care for residents.
