Abia State authorities have rescued a 7-year-old boy, Ugochukwu Destiny, after severe physical abuse by his father, Ugochukwu Ezechinyere, and stepmother, Kelechi. The arrest followed a whistleblower’s report to the office of the governor’s wife, prompting the Ministry of Women Affairs to intervene. Ministry officials, led by Director of Child Development Mrs. Josephine Onulaka, retrieved the child from his school in Aba and placed him in state protective custody.

The victim, a Basic 1 pupil, detailed repeated assaults with wooden sticks and sharp objects at his home on Ugo Street, Aba. Commissioner for Women Affairs Dr. Maureen Aghukwa urged public vigilance against child abuse, noting ongoing investigations at the suspects’ residence.
The state reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing child protection protocols and prosecuting offenders.
