Governor Alex Otti has greenlit a major energy initiative that will transform power supply for Abia State University and surrounding communities. The newly approved 10-megawatt Independent Power Project in Uturu marks a strategic implementation of the state’s recently enacted electricity law, which grants Abia autonomy in energy generation and distribution.
During a political event in Isuikwuato LGA where he received a defecting state legislator, Governor Otti outlined the project’s significance as part of his administration’s comprehensive infrastructure overhaul. “The era of darkness ends here,” declared Otti, revealing that a Canadian-based Abia energy expert will lead the nascent Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency (ASERA) to oversee the power sector transformation.
The university power initiative complements broader developmental efforts across the state, including an aggressive road rehabilitation program and the recently launched AbiaFIRST education reform. Political leaders and community stakeholders at the event overwhelmingly endorsed the governor’s vision, with Isuikwuato and Uturu development union presidents specifically praising the electricity project’s potential to stimulate local economies.
When operational, the 10MW plant will not only solve chronic blackouts at the tertiary institution but also serve as a test case for decentralized energy solutions nationwide. The governor’s office confirms feasibility studies are underway, with contractor selection and implementation timelines to be announced in coming weeks.
