The Abia State Government has announced the postponement of the official commissioning of the newly rehabilitated Port Harcourt Road in Aba, initially slated for late May.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, confirmed the delay, citing scheduling conflicts with President Bola Tinubu. “The exercise has been put off,” Kanu stated. “While President Tinubu was expected to commission the project before May 29, his commitments necessitated a rescheduling. He will now visit Abia in early June to inaugurate the road.”
The 30-kilometer Port Harcourt Road, a critical economic artery linking Aba to neighboring states, had been abandoned for over three decades before Governor Alex Otti’s administration prioritized its reconstruction. The project is among several infrastructure initiatives aimed at revitalizing commerce and transportation in the region.
President Tinubu’s visit was initially planned to coincide with his second anniversary in office on May 29. The rescheduled commissioning underscores the road’s significance as a flagship achievement of Otti’s administration, which has focused on upgrading neglected infrastructure since taking office in 2023.
Kanu assured stakeholders that the new date would be formally communicated once finalized. “This project symbolizes our commitment to transformative development. We appreciate the public’s patience and look forward to a successful event,” he added.
