In a heartfelt appeal that has gained significant traction on social media, a user identified as JACK The Builder™ took to X (formerly Twitter) to draw attention to the appalling condition of the male hostels at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). In a tweet directed at billionaire businessman and UNN alumnus, Obinna “Obi Cubana” Iyiegbu, the user pleaded for intervention to improve the living conditions of students.
“Nnam biko is there anything you can do about the situation of UNN Male hostel? Maybe with a few of your friends as a way of celebrating your 50th birthday,” the tweet reads, tagging Obi Cubana. “As an Alumni of the university, I believe the association can handle this!”
Accompanying the tweet were several distressing images showing dilapidated buildings, broken staircases, and overall neglect—an unfortunate state for one of Nigeria’s most prestigious universities.
The post, which has since garnered over 80,000 views, highlights a broader issue faced by many public tertiary institutions across Nigeria: severe infrastructure decay due to years of underfunding and lack of maintenance. While students continue to endure these harsh living conditions, calls like this one aim to stir alumni into action.
Obi Cubana, known for his philanthropic initiatives and deep connection to his roots, has not yet publicly responded. However, the momentum generated by the tweet may very well inspire him and others in the alumni community to step in and support a renovation project.
