The transformation of Akanu Ibiam International Airport is entering its final stages, with Enugu State officials confirming the concession process has crossed the 70% completion mark. The transportation Commissioner Dr. Obi Ozor revealed the government’s collaborative effort with private investors should conclude by June 2025, paving the way for major infrastructure upgrades. The pending agreement will trigger construction of long-awaited facilities including the international terminal, cargo handling complex, and aircraft maintenance hangars – alongside crucial runway extensions to accommodate larger aircraft.
This aviation development coincides with Enugu’s ambitious plans to launch its state-owned carrier, Enugu Air, in partnership with private operator Xejet. The airline will debut in May with three modern Embraer jets (E-170 and E-190 models) serving domestic hubs, before expanding to a six-strong fleet with regional routes by year-end. Aviation authorities have already secured operational spaces across seven Nigerian airports for the new carrier, strategically timed to service an expected influx of 15,000 visitors for August’s Nigerian Bar Association conference.
The dual initiatives mark a calculated push to position Enugu as eastern Nigeria’s aviation nucleus. The commissioner also emphasized the Embraer fleet’s suitability for African conditions, with all aircraft meeting strict NCAA standards despite recent turbulence in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
